Nestled in the heart of Pontevedra’s old town, Parador de Pontevedra is a classic historic stay housed in the Casa do Barón, a noble mansion dating back to the 16th century. This heritage hotel blends Galician charm with modern comforts, offering travelers a unique experience in one of Spain’s most picturesque towns.
Just a short walk from Herrería Square, the Parador was our ideal location for exploring Pontevedra’s pedestrian-friendly streets, vibrant plazas, and rich architectural history. We tried the on-site restaurant serves traditional Galician cuisine.
We stayed in this refurbished mansion during our visit to Pontevedra and want to share our honest experience. From its historical ambiance to its service, amenities, and dining, we’ll cover everything you need to know to decide if Parador de Pontevedra is the right choice for your stay in Galicia.
Considering hotel prices in Galicia, the Parador de Pontevedra falls into the Moderate price category. Location | ★★★★★ |
The Parador de Pontevedra is located at the beginning of the city’s historic center, within walking distance of the main tourist attractions. Just a few minutes’ walk away, you can reach the Basilica of Santa María, the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin, and Plaza de la Herrería. Its prime location allows visitors to explore the city on foot, enjoying its cobblestone streets and outdoor cafés.
Despite being at the start of the historic center, you can access the hotel by car to drop off your luggage and then park at a secure municipal parking lot a few blocks away, with a reasonable additional cost.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful corner room in the building. The spacious room had two large windows and a door leading to a private balcony. The charming colorful curtains added a cheerful touch, and together, they offered great views of the square and the old town of Pontevedra, as well as providing excellent natural light to the room. The double bed consists of two single beds placed side by side. The beds were small but comfortable. Due to the building’s refurbished condition, the rooms are quite different from one another, so your experience may vary
The bathroom is also spacious and features a bathtub with a handheld showerhead mounted on a bracket.
The furniture aligns with the decor of the parador, and while it could be improved, it meets the expectations for this price range.
The climate control system is central, and given the mild temperature during our stay, it wasn’t on. However, at night, we had to open the windows and were disturbed by the sounds of Pontevedra’s lively nightlife, which negatively affected the quality of our sleep.

Gastronomy | ★★★★★ |
We had dinner at the parador’s restaurant, “Casa do Barón,” known for its Galician cuisine. The stately dining room, in line with the parador, is beautiful. The quality of the dishes is exceptional, including the most tender and delicious veal steak (solomillo de ternera) of our trip. The restaurant has an excellent selection of local wines, and the young Mencía wine we chose was delightful. The service is top-notch, with waitstaff who can describe the dishes and their craft perfectly. There is also a bar with a well-stocked selection of drinks and cozy decor. The parador offers breakfast, but we chose to visit other establishments, so we cannot comment on it.

Service | ★★★★★ |
Galician hospitality at its finest. We were warmly welcomed and given detailed instructions on where to park the car. The staff always greeted us with cordial and sincere salutations, making us feel welcome and valued at all times.

How We Evaluate Hotels
To help you align your expectations, we categorize hotels into four groups: budget, moderate, premium, and luxury, from the least expensive to the most expensive in each market.
This way, we ensure that we’re comparing apples to apples. A five-star budget hotel is not necessarily a better choice than a four-star luxury hotel; it’s all about managing expectations within each price category.
Different markets have different expectations, and we take these into account by comparing properties within the same price category for each market. For example, for a moderately priced hotel in Bangkok, I expect a pool on the premises; this is not the case in most American and European big cities.
In those rare cases where we find a hotel that we rate with a perfect five stars, we award the following medals according to each category:
- Budget: Good, Nice, and Affordable.
- Moderate: Exceptional Value.
- Comfort: Premium Excellence.
- Luxury: Unforgettable Experience.
We believe that by following this methodology, we help our readers make more informed and satisfying travel choices.
