My favorite day trip from Chiang Mai? The Samoeng Loop. This scenic drive makes for a perfect self-guided tour through Northern Thailand’s natural beauty—with highlights like Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, strawberry farms, peaceful waterfalls, and winding forest roads. Whether you ride a motorbike or drive, this Samoeng Loop tour delivers a full day of unforgettable stops, panoramic views, and lunch in a lush hillside café.
When is the best time to do the Samoeng Loop?
November to January is ideal — cool weather, clear skies, and strawberry season in full swing. Avoid the “smokey season” from late February to April, when air quality drops due to agricultural burning.
What’s the best way to explore the Samoeng Loop?
Experienced riders can enjoy it by motorbike, but it’s not for beginners. I chose a driver, which made the 100 km loop more relaxing. It’s affordable, safer, and lets you enjoy the views stress-free — especially if you’re not used to driving on the left.
How long does it take to complete the Samoeng Loop?
Plan for a full day. Start early and allow time for waterfalls, strawberry stops, the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, and lunch. With breaks, the route typically takes 6–7 hours and feels best when you’re not rushing.
What should I bring for the trip?
Wear sandals with grip for waterfalls and pack a swimsuit if you want a dip. Bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and offline Google Maps just in case. A light jacket is handy for cool mornings or sudden showers in the hills.
How to Drive the Samoeng Loop – Route, Stops & Timing Tip
Start your Samoeng Loop tour around 8:30 a.m. to enjoy the best light and cooler temps. We recommend going counterclockwise — it flows better and hits the scenic spots early. Stop at Mae Sa Waterfall and Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden in the morning, then enjoy a relaxed lunch at Pong Yang Ang Doi, one of the best hillside restaurants on the loop.
In the afternoon, continue toward Mon Jam and soak in the views. If you time it right, you’ll catch golden hour over the Samoeng Forest — a perfect end to the drive.

Mae Sa Waterfalls – Hike, Swim & Relax Near Chiang Mai
About 30 kilometers from Chiang Mai, our first stop is the beautiful Mae Sa Waterfalls — the perfect way to kick off the Samoeng Loop and reconnect with nature. Located inside Doi Suthep–Pui National Park, the falls stretch across 10 scenic levels, linked by a well-marked circular trail through lush jungle.
Each tier offers a different view of the cascading water, and a few even have natural pools where you can cool off with a quick dip. Don’t forget your swimsuit if you’re tempted! It’s a peaceful, easy hike with just the right dose of greenery and soothing sounds to start the day.

Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden – Nature, Canopy Walk & Orchids Near Chiang Mai
Just 40 minutes from Chiang Mai, Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is a must-stop on the Samoeng Loop. Spread across 1,000 hectares in Mae Rim, it showcases native and exotic plants in themed gardens and greenhouses. Entry is 100 THB for adults and includes access to the canopy walkway — a highlight worth the visit on its own.
Walk Among the Treetops – Thailand’s Longest Canopy Walk
This 400-meter walkway rises 20 meters above the forest floor, letting you stroll through the treetops with sweeping views all around. Some sections have glass floors for extra thrills. It’s scenic, fun, and surprisingly peaceful — don’t skip it.

Orchid Pavilion & Gardens – Mist, Color & Serenity
Inside the greenhouses, don’t miss the Orchid Pavilion, where mists, streams, and hanging moss set a rainforest mood. The orchids — in vibrant purples, whites, and pinks — are breathtaking. Outside, flower-lined paths and fountains make for a relaxing, photo-worthy stop.

Lunch Stop – Northern Thai Flavors at Pong Yang Ang Do
Next up: Pong Yang Ang Doi, one of the most scenic lunch stops on the Samoeng Loop. Tucked in a green valley with hills all around and a stream flowing right through the property, it’s the kind of place that makes food taste even better.
The menu focuses on northern Thai dishes served fresh and fast. Wooden decks, soft air, and the sound of water, Thai food … We might be in Nirvana.
After your meal, take a stroll along the wooden walkways, check out the farm animals, or browse the small souvenir shop. They also have cozy bungalows if you ever want to come back and spend the night surrounded by nature.

Mon Jam – Strawberry Picking & Scenic Views Near Chiang Ma
Just 6 km off the Samoeng Loop, Mon Jam is a peaceful hilltop retreat in the Mae Rim area, known for its fresh mountain air, sweeping panoramas, and vibrant seasonal colors.
During the cooler months, roadside stalls are filled with fresh local strawberries, a regional favorite grown on the surrounding slopes. They’re sweet, juicy, and the perfect snack as you explore the gardens and terraces.
The flower gardens at Mon Jam are a visual treat — with wildflowers, poppies, and curated plant beds bringing bursts of color to the natural landscape. Add in panoramic views over the green hills, and it’s easy to see why this spot is a local and tourist favorite.

Samoeng Loop Viewpoint – Breathtaking Mountain Views Near Chiang Mai
To wrap up your tour, head to the Samoeng Viewpoint — the perfect final stop before returning to Chiang Mai. From this elevated perch, you’ll take in sweeping views of rolling mountains, thick forests, and mist-covered valleys stretching deep into the horizon.

How did you find a driver for hire?
I negotiated with a Grab driver that I liked from another trip. Grab also has the option to hire drivers for the day. Because the trip is longer than a normal trip you might have to negotiate a fare higher than the one indicated by Grab.
